she's the resulting experiment of a secret organization trying to force the reincarnation of an old prophet who could access higher dimensions, for... some nefarious undefined reason. the org functioned behind the front of an orphanage, where she was raised in isolation from the rest of society. all the other kids resented the clear special treatment she got, except for a girl around her age called Meredith.
as they grew up, Meredith would notice how much the tests she was subjected to were deteriorating her health, and convinced her to run away together.
most of the story is about this part of them hitchhiking and hiding from the organization.
they encounter a creature from a higher dimension called Grinny, who’s been trying to contact Evelyn for years but couldn’t properly communicate with her inside the facility, and it helps them navigate the world.
Evelyn was never taught how to handle her powers without medicine, so on the way she also has to learn to control them, with Grinny’s aid. she's way better than Liam at understanding her powers and how the higher dimensions work, but it overwhelms her more since she actually tries to access them.
at one point they are found out and Evelyn is kidnapped by the organization. in a rush, the scientists ramp up the experiments to force her to open a portal. Meredith and Grinny manage to save her before that happens, but some damage is done.
go into hiding again but things are more complicated since the experiments left Evelyn weak, constantly phasing out of reality (both literally and figuratively) and doubting her surroundings. entirely different from her usual cheery and self-assured personality.
not helped by Grinny telling them both that the other is hiding something, this all leads to a huge fight in which Evelyn accuses Meredith of trying to control her, and they end up going their separate ways for a while.
this part is kinda fuzzy. she eventually realizes Grinny has been manipulating her, trying to harbor her powers for itself, and threatens it, telling it to get lost. i know something else happens, either because of the organization or by Evelyn's own hand, that nearly brings the end of the world when she tries to combine all dimensions. at the last second Meredith appears and tries to stop her.
never decided if either one or both of them die. always imagined the ending being kinda bittersweet but can't commit to it.
in any case, the world was left scarred by this, and stories of the Seer will definitely be told for centuries to come...
